Lectio Divina

What Is Lectio Divina? Lectio Divina—Latin for “divine reading”—is a sacred, time-honored Christian practice of slowly reading and prayerfully reflecting on Scripture. Rooted in the early monastic tradition, this contemplative approach invites you not just to study the Bible, but to listen for God’s voice and encounter His presence in a deeply personal way.

Rather than rushing through Scripture or analyzing it for facts, Lectio Divina helps you move from simply reading to spiritually receiving. It involves four gentle movements:

  1. Lectio (Read): Begin by slowly reading a short passage of Scripture. Read it more than once. What is the text saying at face value? Let the words settle in your mind.

  2. Meditatio (Reflect): Notice what word, phrase, or image stands out to you. Reflect on why it caught your attention. How might God be speaking to you through this?

  3. Oratio (Respond): Turn your thoughts into prayer. Talk to God about what stirred your heart. Share your feelings, ask questions, or simply sit with Him in honest conversation.

  4. Contemplatio (Rest): Let go of words. Rest quietly in God’s presence. Be still, and allow Him to speak to your soul beyond what can be spoken or understood.

Lectio Divina is less about information and more about transformation. It’s a rhythm of slowing down, becoming present, and deepening your relationship with God through His Word. Whether you're spiritually dry or longing to go deeper, this practice creates sacred space for God to meet you right where you are.
