When Life Won’t Slow Down, God Still Does

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” — Psalm 62:8 (NIV)

I don’t know about you, but it feels like life is moving faster and faster every day.

Just this past Monday night, my 8th-grade daughter attended her first high school informational and registration event. I sat there thinking, How are we already here? It feels like just yesterday she was learning to read—and now we’re talking about graduation requirements and future plans.

Time doesn’t slow down. Responsibilities don’t pause. Notifications don’t stop.

We live in a hurried world.

Years ago, Dallas Willard was asked to describe Jesus in one word. His answer? Unhurried.

That word has always stayed with me.

An Unhurried God

This morning, during my time with God, I was reflecting on Psalm 62:8:

“Trust in him at all times… pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

What stood out to me was simple, but powerful: God takes time to listen when I pour out my heart.

If you Google the “top ten world issues” right now, you’ll find a long list—wars, political tensions, economic challenges, disasters, global crises. The world feels heavy and complicated.

And yet…

God stops to listen to me.

He is not rushed.

He is not distracted.

He is not multitasking when I pray.

When I pour out my heart—my worries, frustrations, fears, hopes—He listens.

Why That Matters

As a dad and as a pastor, I know how easy it is to be physically present but mentally elsewhere. It’s easy to nod while thinking about the next meeting. Easy to hear words without truly listening.

Listening takes intention.

Listening takes slowing down.

Listening takes setting aside your own agenda.

And yet that’s exactly what God does.

He invites us to “pour out our hearts.” That phrase implies honesty. Rawness. Emotion. Not polished prayers—but real ones.

And He receives them.

Why I Can Trust God

I can trust God because:

  • He cares enough to listen.

  • He loves enough to stop.

  • He is steady when my world feels rushed.

  • He is a refuge when everything else feels unstable.

In a world that constantly demands our attention, God gives us His.

In a culture of hurry, God is unhurried.

In a noisy world, He makes space for our voice.

Maybe What We Need Most

Maybe what we need most isn’t more efficiency or better time management.

Maybe we need to remember that we are known—and heard—by an unhurried God.

When life feels like it’s speeding up…

When your kids are growing up too fast…

When work feels overwhelming…

When the world feels chaotic…

You can trust Him.

Not because everything slows down.

But because He does.

And He is our refuge.

👉 I invite you to take the next step.

If you’ve been longing to slow down, to be heard, or to experience God as refuge in the middle of your hurried life, spiritual direction may be the next step for you.
